PADI DISTINCTIVE SPECIALTY - UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGY DIVER

Organized directly by CENTRO SUB CAMPI FLEGREI

This course provides a safe and supervised introduction to underwater archaeology. It is designed so that divers learn the theoretical concepts, begin to practice the techniques and procedures for planning and learn to recognise the problems and hazards of archaeological diving.

The importance of implementing environmentally sound techniques and performing sensitivity analysis of the archaeological work will be emphasized throughout the course.

The training highlights the fun, the social value and personal satisfaction whilst emphasizing safety aspects. At the end of the course, participants will be awarded with PADI’s Distinctive Specialty “Underwater Archaeology Diver”.

INTRODUCTION TO UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGY

In association with REITIA - Documentation for Underwater Archaeology

This course is aimed primarily at students and graduates in archaeology and cultural heritage (but also open to recreational divers holding second level certificates or higher) who are interested in acquiring basic techniques for exploration and documentation in the field of underwater archaeology. The course is limited to a maximum of 10 students and will divided into theoretical and practical sessions taught by REITIA instructors and specialists. During the practical activity, which will take place within the confines of the Protected Marine Reserve of Baiae, students will experiment with various techniques using equipment specifically intended for underwater research and documentation.

Reitia, International Training Partner of the Nautical Archaeological Society (NAS - international benchmark for training in the field of underwater archaeology) offers the courses NAS Introduction to Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology and NAS Part I: Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology according to the internationally validated educational standards as accredited by UNESCO and as college credit in many European countries and beyond.

The training courses include learning the basic principles of underwater archaeology covering study of major operational areas and methods of detection using both 2D and 3D simulation of different environments according to the standards of the NAS, the guidelines of the Italian Association of Scientific Diving Operators (AIOSS) and those of the European Scientific Diving (scuba diving conducted for scientific purposes).

VOLUNTEERS' WORKING HOLIDAY

In association with Legambiente

Legambiente, in collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendence of Naples and Caserta and the Protected Marine Reserve (AMP) of Baiae, will compliment the work performed during previous working holidays within the underwater Archaeology Park of Baiae. Once this is completed, the project will move along the stretch of coast towards the Aragonese Castle of Baia where there are the submerged remains of a large seaside villa comprising fish ponds, pavilions and arcades. Of particular significance is a great semicircular structure, probably another pond, protected by pillars or opus pilarum (large blocks of cement and tuff that seem to form the visible pattern of opus reticulatum) which are seen to be evidence of the presence of a pier.

The work involves the classification of biodiversity, the reproduction of architectural details of the wall structures, the three-dimensional relief of these structures, the listing and the artistic reproduction of the six statues of Claudius' Nymphaeum. At the second site, the remains of the walls and opus pilarum will be measured and documented. Site maps will then be drawn up along with fact sheets for dissemination of species and a scale model showing the site's relief.

It is intended to divide into smaller working groups; non-divers will snorkel (mask and fins) and produce planimetric surveys from the surface whereas scuba divers who hold a valid basic level diving certification will carry out bathymetric surveys. [Should non-divers wish to take a course in diving, this is also possible].

Situated at Baia in the Phlegraean Fields, the sunken city is one of the most exciting and unique places in the world to dive. In these waters, constructions dating back to the Roman ages are still very visible and remarkably intact.
